When laser eye surgery is performed on a patient, a device called a microkeratome is used to create a spherical fold inside the cornea. The doctor folds the flap open, and removes some tissue of the cornea underneath. To do this the doctor will use a special laser called a excimer laser.

A ultraviolet beam emits from this device and removes small amounts of the cornea in order to alter its shape. When the cornea is properly shaped, it properly focuses light onto the retina, giving the patient excellent vision. The corneal fold is then laid back into place, and it covers the area where tissue from the cornea was removed.

LASIK is a procedure which benefits both nearsighted and farsighted people. Astigmatism is also a condition that can be corrected by laser eye surgery. If you are considering laser eye surgery, the first important thing for you to do is choose an excellent surgeon.
